Artist Statement of Toby Short

His mission as an artist is to explore between the strata of the established and recognisable framework that constitutes our existence in an attempt to determine something integral to it, but not immediately perceptible. To strive to expose that which is logically speaking abundant but not altogether apparent to an information savvy world that believes that there is little left to discover. His view is that, to some extent, we are bound by the logic of our own understanding, overwhelmed by a comprehensive infrastructure of knowledge of our own creation.

These essences, he tells us, lie in greater abundance in the ancillary space adjacent to the trajectory of our collective gaze. In fact they move with our gaze, constantly avoiding the limelight like a blind spot on the retina of general perception where we can never manage to look.

“As a boy Toby Short used to love exploring. I was particularly fascinated by empty buildings and deserted spaces, and in the Thatcher era London where I grew up, an excess of privatization and unemployment on an industrial scale had created a whole plethora of these playgrounds for disenfranchised teenagers such as I. I was fascinated by atypical, idle space, contravening the conventions of existence. The visual manifestation of an imperfection in society’s perfect machine. The space in-between things.
